North Wales Gets Flood Relief Works
A £6.4m flood defence scheme to protect parts of north Wales has been given the green light.
The Welsh Assembly has pledged £3.8m towards the project in Tywyn, Gwynedd, which will start later this month.
Authorities have predicted works will prevent an estimated 78 properties from a risk of annual flooding.
A £1.9m flood defence scheme to protect Llanfairpwll, Anglesey has also been given the go ahead after Welsh Environment Minister Jane Davidson sanctioned £1.6m for the project.
The scheme will reduce the risk of flooding to an estimated 90 properties in the Ffordd Penmynydd area of Llanfairpwll, which has been plagued by flooding in recent years and will take around eight months to complete.
Minister Davidson said: "These projects will do just that and will help protect the local area, homes, businesses and jobs. It is a great example of local government and the Welsh Assembly Government working together for the benefit of the community.
"The news of these projects will come as a great relief particularly to those who have been directly affected by flooding in the past."
Earlier this month Ms Davidson gave a new £5m flood risk management scheme for Denbigh the go ahead when she announced that the Welsh Assembly Government would fund 51% of its total cost with the European Union funding 40% and the remainder coming from the local authority (9%).

'First Class' Halted By Welsh Secretary
The new Welsh Secretary of State has said she will no longer use first class rail travel. Cheryl Gillan revealed the change as she met Labour First Minister Carwyn Jones, Head of the Welsh Assembly Government, at his Cardiff Bay office. The Cardiff-born minister and her officials will also travel 2nd class.

The National Audit Office (NAO) has warned that the UK's flood defences are likely to "deteriorate faster" as the money being spent on maintaining them is "insufficient". A report from the NAO claims that half of the country's defences received a "minimal level" of maintenance which was insufficient to secure homes.
