Man and Boy Jailed For Killing
A man and a 14-year-old boy who savagely attacked a vulnerable man in a London park have been jailed for a total of 11 years at The Old Bailey.
Mantas Kraucevicius, a carpenter, 27, of Sutton Court Road, E13 was jailed for seven years after being found guilty on 30 November 2009 of the manslaughter of 60-year-old Eric Rider in Plaistow.
The 14-year-old, now aged 15, of the E16 area was jailed for four years after previously pleading guilty to manslaughter at the start of the trial.
The court heard how the pair had been out drinking all night and came across the victim in Plaistow park.
They approached their victim and asked for a cigarette. While Mr Rider was sitting on a bench, Kraucevicius kicked him in the face.
The victim was further kicked in the chest and head by Kraucevicius before being kicked and stamped on by the 14-year-old.
Such was the force of the attack that an impression of the sole of the 14-year-old's shoe was found on Mr Rider's cheek.
The jury heard from the pathologist that the severe head and facial injuries he received were more normally associated with a car accident or a fall head first from several storeys.
Police were called at about 7.30am on Saturday 27 June 2009 to reports of a man found unconscious in Beaumont Road E13.
Mr Rider was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.
A post-mortem examination gave cause of death as blunt forced trauma. Mr Rider suffered fractures to his face and spine in the attack.
Police later apprehended the pair who carried out the attack.
Mr Rider's blood was later found on the trainers and trousers of both defendants.
Both were charged the following day.
In an extract from a family impact statement, Patricia Venton, Mr Rider's ex-partner, said: "I hope our children can forgive and not carry the burden of hate. I hope our children and grandchildren will never suffer the pain like that of their parents and grandparents.
"Grandparents should die from old age, not from the actions of two strangers who never gave Eric a chance."
