Drink-Drive Limit May Be Cut

Just one pint of beer could soon put motorists at odds with the law if - as mooted - the drink-drive limit is lowered.

Drivers would then be at risk being unfit to drive after drinking a single pint of beer, the Transport Secretary has suggested.

Lord Adonis has more or less said that he is ready to bring England and Wales into line with much of Europe if Labour retains power.

This would bring the limit for a man of average build down to around a pint of beer, for women this would be even less.

The Government is waiting to receive a report from Sir Peter North QC on whether the current 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood should be cut to 50.

Sir Peter's report is due to be with Lord Adonis within weeks and it would herald the biggest shake up in drink-drive laws since the introduction of the breathalyser by Barbara Castle in 1967.

There is growing speculation that Sir Peter will call for a cut and also recommend even lower limits for novice, lorry and bus drivers.

This group could face a 20 milligram limit.

It is also likely to tighten the law on "drug driving", creating a new offence of getting behind the wheel with a quantity of illegal narcotics in the bloodstream.
