New Equality Law Passed
The Equality Bill last night completed the final stage of its passage through Parliament, and will now become law. The Bill, which was first introduced to the House of Commons almost a year ago, will be sent to the Queen for Royal Assent after MPs approved amendments made by the House of Lords. Once the Bill receives Royal Assent it will formally become an Act and be introduced to the statute book. The provisions in the Bill will begin to take effect in the autumn.
Boy Charged With Rape
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with raping a woman, Greater Manchester Police confirmed today. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged on Tuesday 30 March 2010. He is due to appear before Trafford Youth Court on Tuesday 13 April. Around midnight on Friday 11 December into the early hours of Saturday 12 December 2009, a woman was raped near Waterside, Sale.
Appeal After Store Robbery
Police in Wolverhampton are appealing for the public's help following a robbery at a general store in the Park Village area of the city. The incident occurred at around 8.40pm on Easter Sunday, when three men entered the store on Nine Elms Lane and threatened a member of staff. Having taken cash from the till and two bottles of whisky, the offenders ran off in different directions. Male one is described as being in his early 20s and of mixed race with light brown skin. Approximately 6" tall, of medium build and had distinctive 'tramlines' shaved into his left eyebrow. He was wearing a dark blue bandana over his face and a sky blue hooded top. Male two was in his late teens and of mixed race with light brown skin. Approximately 6"2 tall, heavy build and spoke with a local accent with a slight African tone. He was wearing a black bandana over his face and a black tracksuit with a lime green Nike logo. Male three was in his early 20s, of mixed race, approximately 5"8 tall and of fat build. He was wearing a grey bandana over his face and a grey zip-up tracksuit with the hood pulled up.

Higher earners could face higher fines
A plan to penalise higher income earners by imposing larger fines for offences has been proposed by the government. The Management of Offenders and Sentencing Bill proposes to increase the maximum fine for an adult in a magistrates' court to £15,000, £3,000 for offenders aged between 14-17 and between £250 - £750 for those under-fourteen.

Amendment Banning Smoking In Cars With Children Before Lords
The House of Lords is to vote later today on an amendment to the Children and Families Bill, seeking a ban on smoking in cars carrying children. The amendment has been put forward by Labour, who have said that if it is not passed by the Lords today, they will include it in its next election manifesto.

January 13 has been set as the trial date for Coronation Street actor Bill Roache. 81-year-old Roache faces 7 charges of historical sexual abuse, including two counts of rape against a 15-year-old and five counts of indecent assault against four girls aged between 11 and 16.

CPI Rises To 2.8%
In February the UK’s consumer price inflation (CPI) rose to 2.8%, thought to be the result of rising energy prices, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show. The Bank of England's inflation target for the CPI is 2%. Before February, CPI inflation had been 2.7% for four months in a row.

The Government has said it has listened to peers over it's highly controversial Health bill, as it prepares to enter the House of Lords for a second time next week. The bill has attracted wide criticism over its proposed reforms to the NHS that would see increased competition and major adjustments to the management structures.
