Thames Body Probe Seeks Rescuer
Police officers who are investigating the death of a man whose body was recovered from the Thames are appealing to a would-be rescuer to come forward.
They are keen to hear from a man who went into the River Thames at ShadwellBasin in a bid to find 20-year-old Ibrahim Gharib.
However the water was so cold that he was forced to climb back out almost immediately.
He is described as white, bald headed and aged between 30-40 years.
Detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command believe that he might have information about what happened immediately prior to Mr Gharib going into the river.
They continue to appeal for witnesses and ask the man and anyone else who can help to call the incident room at Barking on 020 8345 3734 or to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
It is believed that Mr Gharib and a 17-year old girl had been on the waterside and may have become involved in an altercation with some other people at about 9.30pm on Thursday 18 March.
Police were called at alomsot 9.40pm to reports that a man had fallen into the Thames at ShadwellBasin, Garnet Street, E1. The London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, police and the Marine Policing Unit attended the scene.
Mr Gharib's body was recovered from the Thames on Friday morning. A post mortem examination held at Poplar mortuary gave cause of death as drowning.
On 19 March a man was arrested at his home in East London in connection with the inquiry, and was taken to an east London police station.
He is now bailed to return on 15 April, pending further inquiries.
