Two Hurt In Exeter House Explosion
Two people have had a lucky escape after a gas leak lead to an explosion that ripped their Exeter home apart.
The pair understood to be mother and son were taken to hospital to be treated for severe burns following the explosion in Antonine Crescent, Redhills.
Police and fire services evacuated neighbours and set up a 200-metre cordon around the property following the dramatic incident just after 2pm yesterday.
A total of 35 properties were evacuated and although the cordon was reduced to 50 metres shortly after the explosion, it remained in place for several hours.
Fire, police and ambulance services attended the scene and police are investigating the incident but believe it was caused by a gas leak.
A building inspector from Exeter City Council said the properties on either side of the demolished house have also been deemed unsafe.
Albert Barnes, 77, also known as John, who lives in Antonine Crescent, said: "I was having my lunch when there was a massive explosion.
"The whole house shook and then I heard shouting and screaming.
"I looked out and the house was gone, there was only rubble everywhere. I saw a man coming over the rubble and he had cuts all over him. He was badly burned and I could see the skin coming off his hands."
Esme Owen, who lives two doors away, said: "I was sitting in the lounge and then the house started shaking.
"I could see debris flying out the window so I ran out and the whole front had blown off.
"There were people climbing out from under the rubble carrying their dog, and they were screaming as well. It was horrible."

UK annual house price inflation in June 2007 was 12.1%, up from 10.8% in May 2007. Annual house price inflation in London was 17.5% in June, up from 14.3% in May. The UK annual house price inflation rate for the 3 months to June was 11.3% and 15.1% in London. The UK house price inflation rate rose from 10.8% in May 2007 to 12.1% in June 2007.

Annual house price inflation dropped again in October, according to the latest figures from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. House price inflation was 2.2% in October, a fall from September’s figure of 3.3%. The ODPM reported that the average house price in the UK was £186,103 in October, compared with £186,755 in September.

UK house prices fall, report shows
UK house prices fell by 0.5% between January and February, figures from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) have shown. The drop in prices, which saw the average house price in the UK in February fall to £179,491 from £180,465 in January, is smaller than the 1% fall reported in the same period last year.

Body Found Following Explosion in Co Durham
A body of a man has been recovered from a house in Darlington, Co Durham, following an explosion. It is understood that fire crews were called after a suspected explosion caused a fire at a property on Lewes Road at about 02:50 on Friday morning. The body was found by firefighters after they entered the building.
