Met Meets May
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has met new Home Secretary Theresa May. They both visited the Winstanley estate in Clapham, South West London this week. Whilst there the Home Secretary met members of the Latchmere Safer Neighbourhoods team and discussed policing in the capital. When asked about the appointment of the new Home Secretary the Commissioner said that he was pleased to be among the first to congratulate Theresa May and said that he was looking forward to working with her to address the challenges facing policing in the capital including counter terrorism, combating organised crime and ensuring that the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games run safely and successfully.
Glider Alert
A pilot, motorists and residents have had a lucky escape after a glider crashed on a main road in Oxfordshire, narrowly missing a house. The glider avoided hitting evening rush-hour traffic before flipping over across the A4421, near to the old RAF Bicester site at Caversfield. The pilot was uninjured and managed to escape but the single seat glider was badly damaged.
WWII Pilot Recalled
A memorial is to be unveiled to a Scottish fighter pilot who shot down the first enemy bomber to be destroyed in British airspace in WWII. Patrick Gifford, from Castle Douglas, was killed in action in Belgium on 16 May 1940. A plaque will be unveiled in his memory in his home town on Sunday to mark the 70th anniversary of his death.

The AA clarifies position on motorway speed limits
The AA Motoring Trust has clarified reports that it has backed calls for an 80 mph limit on motorways. The motoring organisation has confirmed that a suggested pilot scheme for a limit of 80mph related only to certain controlled motorway sections, such as those that are in place on the M25 near Heathrow.

As part of the long-running 'Get Home Safely' campaign, twelve Company magazine readers met with the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary to discuss their concerns. After a night walk to Number Ten Downing Street, the women spoke with David Cameron and Theresa May, highlighting that any cuts to the police service would be a big concern.
