Terror Suspect 'To Stay'
The alleged leader of an al-Qaeda plot to bomb targets in north west England has won his appeal against deportation. A special immigration court said Abid Naseer was an al-Qaeda operative - but could not be deported because he faced torture or death back home in Pakistan. Naseer, 23, was one of 10 Pakistan students arrested last April as part of a massive counter terrorism operation in Liverpool and Manchester.
Lanark Forecourt Robbed
Armed robbers have escaped with hundreds of pounds after a raid on a petrol station in Chryston in North Lanarkshire. Two men, one carrying a firearm, entered Braeside Garage on Cumbernauld Road at about 8am on Sunday. They demanded money and cigarettes then fled in what was believed to be a silver Audi A3. Staff members were uninjured but left badly shaken. Police have now issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Irish Cardinal 'Holds On'
It emerged today that the Catholic Primate of all Ireland Dr Sean Brady will not step down until his 75th birthday. That's in four years time and is despite him facing increasing pressure to resign over his role in an investigation of clerical abuse. The cardinal has admitted that he was present when children signed vows of silence over allegations against a paedophile priest in 1975. However, he has now asked for a Vatican inspection of child protection procedures to include Armagh diocese and for an additional bishop to be appointed in the diocese. His comments followed the publication of the Annual Report of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland. It found that nearly 200 new allegations of abuse have been reported to the Catholic Church's child protection watchdog since April 2009.
Cancelled Third Runway 'Confirmed'
Hillingdon Council Leader Cllr Ray Puddifoot has welcomed the confirmation that the new Government will cancel the third runway at Heathrow. The decision which forms a key part of the coalition agreement between the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties is the final nail in the coffin for the controversial scheme. It is the second victory in just two months for anti-expansion campaigners. In March, Lord Justice Carnwath said the then Government was wrong to have proceeded as if nothing had changed since the 2003 airports white paper setting out plans for airport expansion across the UK.
