Deported Gaza Activist Hurt

As tension mounts over the imminent arrival of an Irish Aid vessel into the Israeli guarded waters, it has emerged that a deported Irish citizen was injured in scuffles with security personnel late last night. Fiachra O'Luain was treated in hospital in Istanbul for injuries he is believed to have sustained at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv during his deportation. His injuries are not believed to be serious. The incident has served to rack up the pressure on the Israeli Government just as the Irish aid ship, the Rachael Corrie, is set to enter the same waters where Israeli forces shot and killed nine crew members on the Turkish led aid Flotilla earlier this week. The Irish government has asked that Israel not interfere with the passage of the Rachael Corrie.

Hospital Cash Stolen

Thieves stole more than £18,000 during an overnight raid at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Surrey Police said a safe and its contents were taken from an office at the Egerton Road hospital in the early hours of Tuesday. The thieves forced a door and broke a window to get into the area, which is part of the hospital's catering facility. Detectives have appealed for witnesses to contact officers.

Motorbiker Dies

A motorcyclist has been killed in a collision with a car in Aberdeenshire. The victim, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on the A957 at Rickarton near Stonehaven on Wednesday at about 8.15pm last night. The driver of the silver Vauxhall Astra, a 50-year-old woman from Tayside, was unhurt. Grampian Police want to hear from witnesses who may have seen the bike, a black and orange KTM, before the crash.

Terror Link Sparks Resignation

A recognised 'voice' for the illegal Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) in Northern Ireland has been silenced. The Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) leader Dawn Purvis confirmed she has quit the party, only days after a murder on Belfast's loyalist Shankill Road. Ms Purvis said she was "very sad" about the decision and had given her decision to her party executive last night. The news comes after the murder of Bobby Moffett amidst shoppers on the road last Friday, and on foot of suspicions that the fatal shooting was carried out by the 'on ceasefire' UVF, which had been 'represented' by the PUP, which is why she has now resigned both as a party member and as party leader.
