Lakes Tragedy Probed
A body has been recovered by police divers searching for a missing swimmer at a lake in Cumbria. The man, thought to be in his 20s, was reported missing after failing to surface at Coniston Water at about 6pm on Thursday. It is thought he had been staying at the nearby Coniston Hall campsite. Fellow campers used a buoy to mark the location where he disappeared and police divers were able to locate and recover the body at about 11pm last night.
Border Alert
A large area around Aughnacloy PSNI station in Co Tyrone remains closed as army experts examine a white van which was abandoned at Dungannon Road on Thursday night. About 350 people left their homes and spent the night in three halls. A local councillor said he understood the van contained a bomb made up of 300 - 500 pounds of explosives, but the police have not confirmed this. Residents said the van was left outside the PSNI station, the door was lying open and the engine was running.
Flights 'On Time'
On-time performance of scheduled flights at the ten airports monitored by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was 74% in January to March 2010, seven percentage points lower than the same months in 2009, according to figures released recently by the CAA. Flight numbers at the ten airports dropped by 7% in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the first quarter of 2009 and in January, on-time performance declines and average delay increases were proportionally greater than in the quarter overall at all monitored airports, probably due to bad weather. Figures have not yet been published for the period covering the volcanic ash crisis.
Mortgage Lending Up
Gross mortgage lending totalled an estimated £11.3 billion in May, a 7% increase from £10.5 billion in April and up 10% from £10.2 billion in May 2009, according to new data from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).The market remains subdued and, while more buoyant than a year ago, turnover is a little below that seen towards the end of 2009. Gross lending may marginally undershoot the existing CML forecast of £150 billion for 2010.
