Cameron 'Not Sure' He Would Be PM

David Cameron has revealed that he wasn't sure that he would become Prime Minister following the results of the General Election.

The revelation is made in a new BBC2 documentary about the events following the election by BBC political editor Nick Robinson.

Speaking in the documentary Five Days That Changed Britain, Mr Cameron revealed that he was surprised by Gordon Brown's decision to leave Downing Street and admitted that he told his wife Samantha that he was sure he would not become Prime Minister.

The documentary also reveals that Mr Cameron was unable to tell the Queen what sort of government he would form, as the frenzied negotiations continued after the election resulted in a hung Parliament.

The Prime Minister also told Nick Robinson that he rang his wife and told her "get your frock on" after Gordon Brown stepped down, as he prepared to go to Buckingham Palace.

Five Days That Changed Britain focuses on the frantic efforts to form a government in the wake of the inconclusive results of the May 6 General Election. The Liberal Democrats held talks with both the Conservatives and the Labour party, before forming the current coalition government with the Tories.

Five Days That Changed Britain will be shown on BBC2 tonight at 9pm.
