Pay Offer Lifts Threat Of Airport Strikes
The threat of strike action by workers in six UK airports has been lifted after an agreement was reached on a pay deal.
The deal - a new 2% pay rise offer, plus a lump sum of at least £500 - was struck between airport operator BAA and the Unite union in last-minute talks yesterday.
The lump sum is a profit-related bonus, which could rise to as much as £900 if BAA exceeds its earnings targets for the year.
The union has recommended that its members accept the new offer.
Employees, including security staff, engineers and firefighters voted in favour of strike action last week over a 1.5% pay offer, which BAA had described as "fair and reasonable during a very difficult economic climate for the aviation industry".
Industrial action could have closed Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports and caused chaos for thousands of holidaymakers.
Earlier, Unite confirmed that the threat of strikes had been called off after BAA had tabled a "much improved" offer.
BAA Director Terry Morgan said that both sides had reached a deal that they were happy with. He told reporters: "I think it's a deal that is a fair reward for our staff, but it's a deal that the company can afford."
