Snow Troops 'Draughted' In

As the streets of the Scottish capital suffered the heaviest snowfalls in nearly 50 years, Army troops have been drafted in to help remove the snow and ice and held to ease the freezing 'draught of winter' for Edinburgh.

It is experiencing up to 30cm of snow leaving some of its most vulnerable residents snowed indoors.

However after talks concluded between Edinburgh City Council, the Ministry of Defence and the Scottish government, soldiers came to the rescue clearing roads and pavements.

Troops are attending to those worst-hit across the city, as well as those needing medical services.

Those with priority visits include doctors' surgeries, care homes and hospitals.

Cllr Robert Aldridge said Edinburgh was the "first authority in Scotland to seek help from the military".

The weather across Scotland is expected to warm up slightly today however travel conditions are still reported to be hazardous disrupting travel.

A section of the M8 connecting Edinburgh and Glasgow was reopened yesterday.

The rest of Britain are also experiencing milder weather, with temperatures close to double figures in Northern Ireland.

However the cold snap is set to grip the UK again next week.
