Boxing Champ Dies In Collision

Former heavyweight British boxing champion Gary Mason has died after a collision with a van.

Mr Mason, 48, was riding his bike yesterday in south London when he was involved in the crash.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van driver, 43, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He was taken to a south London police station and was later bailed pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were alerted at about 6.15am yesterday to a van in collision with a bicycle on Sandy Lane South, near the junction with Woodcote Road, Wallington.

"The cyclist, aged 48 years, was pronounced dead at the scene."

A post-mortem examination is due to be held at St Helier Hospital mortuary and an inquest will be opened at Croydon Coroner's Court.

The former champion, who fought the likes of Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis was known for his hard-hitting style. He fought a total of 38 bouts during his career, losing only one fight to Lennox Lewis.

Fatal Collision In Tottenham
Officers are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road collision in Tottenham. Police were called at 9.20am on Tuesday to Broad Lane, north London following reports of a van in collision with a motorcyclist. Officers, London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended. The male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene 9.52am.

Murdered Damilola's Mother Dies
Gloria Taylor, the mother of murdered Damilola Taylor, has died following a suspected heart attack. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said that Mrs Taylor, 57, was taken to hospital after she collapsed while out walking with her husband in Shooters Hill, south east London on Wednesday night. She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at hospital.

Teen Dies In London Park Stabbing
A murder inquiry is underway after a teenager was stabbed to death and another was injured in south London. One boy died in Larkhall Park, Lambeth, south London, and a second is currently receiving hospital treatment after also being injured in the incident. His condition is described as "stable".

On-The-Run Murderer 'Killed By Train'
A convicted murderer who escaped from a secure mental hospital in south London has died after being hit by a train. Paul Caesar, 37, was last seen at Springfield Hospital in Tooting, where he was being held under an order following his 1996 murder conviction. He died at Balham railway station, in south west London, two hours after going missing.

Investigation Launched After Death Of Woman Following Bus Fall
A woman has died in hospital after falling on a route E3 bus on Chiswick High Road, just after 13:30 on Tuesday, 18 August. The 77-year-old woman was taken to hospital by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 17:00.
