Riots Continue In London Overnight

There has been a fresh wave of rioting overnight across London following Saturday night's disturbances in Tottenham.

The Metropolitan Police said that "copycat criminal activity" broke out in Enfield, Walthamstow, Waltham Forest and Brixton on Sunday night.

The disorder also spread to central London, where around 50 youths gathered in Oxford Circus and damaged property in the area.

The disturbances followed rioting in Tottenham on Saturday which broke out following a peaceful protest over the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by police. A candlelight vigil for Mr Duggan, which had been due to take place in Tottenham this evening, has now been cancelled.

More than 100 people have now been arrested following the rioting, which saw police officers attacked, police vehicles damaged and widespread looting.

Around 35 officers have been injured, with three officers being taken to hospital after they were hit by a vehicle while trying to arrest youths looting a shop in Chingford Mount, Waltham Forest, east London.

Today, Home Secretary Theresa May with senior police officers to discuss the situation after returning from her holiday.
