Hansen Apologises For 'Coloured' Remark

The long-serving BBC football pundit Alan Hansen has "unreservedly" apologised after referring to black players as "coloured" during Wednesday night's Match Of The Day.

During a discussion on the racism row involving Luis Suarez and John Terry, the 56-year-old former Liverpool defender said: "I unreservedly apologise for any offence caused. This was never my intention and I deeply regret the use of the word."

Alan's comments sparked anger on Twitter from a number of players, including former Tottenham player Rohan Ricketts who tweeted: "Is this Alan Hansen guy taking the f****** piss?? I'm not coloured??? He is part of the problem when using that word. We are BLACK Alan!"

Meanwhile, former England international Stan Collymore said: "Coloured? What colour would that be? Blue? Green? Orange?"

The incident comes just after it was announced the England captain, John Terry, will face criminal charges over an alleged racist slur made towards Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

Terry was visited by police officers at his Surrey home on Wednesday and informed of the decision by the Crown Prosecution Service.

He has vowed to clear his name.
