Flycatcher Computer Chip Could Create "Internet Of Things"

The British technology group Arm Holdings has produced a low energy computer chip capable of connect parking meters, traffic lights, fridges and even forests to the internet.

Arm Holdings' designs are already used in 100% of all smartphones and tablets on sale today and with it’s new chip, codenamed Flycatcher, it hopes to expand into the "internet of things", the 50bn everyday objects which it is predicted will be connected to the internet by the end of the decade.

Connected parking meters are currently on trial in San Francisco, these let motorists identify free parking spaces, reserve a space and then pay over the internet.

Arm hopes its new tiny semiconductor will find its way into white goods and motors, as well as a use in wireless sensors for home and office.

It could also find a use in medical devices such as blood pressure monitors with results transmitted directly to the doctor’s surgery.

Officially named Cortex-M0+ the chip is specifically designed for devices that cannot be attached to an electricity supply and must run on batteries.

"By enabling the connection of everyday devices we are pushing the edge of the internet out," said Arm director Gary Atkinson. "By connecting rooms or motors to the Internet, you could significantly reduce the amount of energy consumed worldwide."
