Network Rail Fined £4m Over Crash
Network Rail has been fined £4m over the Grayrigg crash in Cumbria in which a woman died and more than 80 people were hurt. The train went over a "degraded" set of points at 92mph and careered down an embankment, killing one person and leaving 88 people injured, including two train crew members. Network Rail admitted health and safety breaches.
Blackpool Tram Derailed
The first of Blackpool's new trams to set off from Fleetwood after a £100m upgrade has come off the rails. Trevor Roberts, Managing Director of Blackpool Transport, said the derailment took place at about 05:55 BST near the Fleetwood Ferry. The problem occurred one day after the tramway's official reopening with a new fleet of 16 computerised trams.
Right To Buy Scheme Launched
From April this year two million social tenants could benefit from a discount of up to £75,000 with Right to Buy scheme. The Government has today launched the reinvigorated Right to Buy, with a new discount of up to £75,000. Since 1980, two million social homes have been bought by their occupants under the scheme, but numbers have gradually fallen – to fewer than 4,000 sales last year – as discounts have declined, making the scheme virtually meaningless in some parts of the country. Prime Minister David Cameron said: "I want many more people to achieve the dream of home ownership. In the 80s, Right to Buy helped millions of people living in council housing achieve their aspiration of owning their own home."
