Scientists Invent Real Sonic Screwdriver
Scientists from Dundee University claim to have invented their own version of the famous Dr Who sonic screwdriver.
The claim to have created a machine that uses ultrasound to lift and rotate a rubber disc floating in a cylinder of water.
It is said to be the first time ultrasound waves have been used to turn objects rather than simply push them.
The study could now help make surgery using ultrasound techniques more precise, the physicists said.
Study Finds The Seaside Has Best Effect On People
A new study suggests we really do like to be beside the seaside.
The study of 2,750 people presented to the British Psychological Society examined the effects of different types of outdoor environments on people.
Researchers found the bracing seaside air had a more positive effect than the countryside or an urban park.
Researcher Mathew White said it could reflect an "innate preference" for the sights and sounds of water.
Abbey Dig Unveiled Unexpected Treasures
An archaeological dig at Furness Abbey has discovered unexpected medieval treasures in a grave at along with the bones of the abbot they belonged to – probably a well-fed, little exercised man in his 40s who suffered from arthritis and type 2 diabetes.
Archaeologists found a silver-gilt crozier (a kind of staff of office) and a jewelled ring in remarkable condition. "This is a very rare find which underlines the abbey's status as one of the great power bases of the middle ages," said Kevin Booth, senior curator at English Heritage.

Police Searching Lake In Nicola Payne Investigation
Police investigating the disappearance of Nicola Payne in 1991 are searching an area of water within Coombe Abbey Country Park. It is understood that Home Office scientists have already conducted a preliminary sonar examination of the lake, and will take focus on a stretch of shallow water.

Smokers die 10 years younger, according to long-term study
On average cigarette smokers die 10 years younger than non-smokers, but stopping at age 50 halves the risk, and stopping at 30 avoids almost all of it, according to a 50-year-long study of smoking and death among British doctors, published in this week's British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Schools promised more money to offer community services
Another 46 schools will get extra money to provide services for the whole community, the government announced today. It also said that by 2006 at least one school in every local education authority will receive funding to become an 'extended' school.
