Ofcom Investigate The Wright Stuff
Ofcom is investigating Matthew Wright’s Channel 5 daytime show over a survey that used the words "mong", "spaz" and "retard".
The media regulator is investigation show the Wright Stuff to see to see if the poll was a breach of broadcasting rules relating to harm and offence. The show now holds the dubious honour of airing the item that attracted the most complaints to Ofcom in 2011.
On April 26 Wright was discussing the comment made by Rupert Murdoch at the Leveson inquiry into press ethics and standards when he described prime minister David Cameron's deceased son as "retarded".
The show then cut to a poll where a female voiceover asked viewers: "According to one survey, what's the most offensive term to describe someone with learning difficulties? a. Mong b. Retard c. Spaz."
The answer, "retard", was subsequently supplied following an ad break. In 2008, a poll by the BBC also concluded that "retard" was the most offensive disability-related word.
Ofcom's investigation is the latest in a string of on-air gaffes that has landed Wright and his show in hot water with the media regulator.
In December he imitated a catchphrase from the TV detective series Taggart – "There's been another murder" – to describe the death of teenager Liam Atchison in the Western Isles of Scotland.
The comment prompted more than 2,200 complaints to.

Chat show veteran Parkinson moves to ITV
ITV has signed up BBC chat show veteran Michael Parkinson on a two-year deal, it has emerged today. Mr Parkinson, who has hosted his eponymously-titled programme for 18 years, said that he decided to move to commercial broadcaster ITV after his Saturday night primetime slot was threatened by the return of Match of the Day.

Chris Moyles Leaves Radio 1 Breakfast Show
Radio 1 breakfast show host, Chris Moyles, has announced he will leave the show at the end of September. Presenting the show since 2004 the now 38-year-old became the stations longest serving breakfast show host in 2009. Announcing the news, he said: "We're off. I wanted to let you know. A couple more months of us, then it's someone else's turn.

Ofcom To Investigate Benefits Street
Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom is to investigate Channel 4's Benefits Street following more than 1,700 complaints. It is understood that viewer were angered by the documentary series' portrayal of benefit claimants, with the show's depiction of crime specifically resulting in hundred of complaints to both the regulator and Channel 4.

Ofcom Fines BBC £150k Over Prank Calls
The BBC has been fined £150,000 by Ofcom over prank phone calls made by Russell Brand (pictured) and Jonathan Ross to actor Andrew Sachs. The sum related to the two episodes of the Russell Brand show broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on the 18 and 25 October 2008. In its report, the media regulator found the broadcasts had breached it's Broadcasting Code.

Police figures show 14% rise in violent crime
Violent crime recorded by police in England and Wales rose by 14% in the three months up to September last year, according to crime survey statistics published by the Home Office today.
