Anti-Corruption Unit Being Investigated For Corruption
Officers working for Scotland Yard’s anti-corruption unit are being investigated over allegations that they were paid thousands of pounds by a firm of private investigators.
A parliamentary inquiry heard today that invoices purport to show how a firm of private investigators made payments in return for information about the Metropolitan police investigation into James Ibori, a notorious Nigerian fraudster.
On Tuesday, the Commons home affairs select committee was told by a lawyer involved in the case that invoices showed about £20,000 of potential payments to police officers in what amounted to an undetected case of "apparent corruption right at the heart of Scotland Yard".
According to the Guardian the Met have tried to discourage the newspaper from reporting on the investigations as it had "evidence that casts doubt on the credibility" of the allegations.
This insistence has now been dropped after MPs heard evidence pertaining to the case.
They report that a police source with knowledge of the investigation, which has been ongoing since October, said developments over the last 24 hours had now led police to take the allegations more seriously.
The case revolves around a private investigation firm called RISC Management. Five years ago the firm was hired to work for Ibori, a former Nigerian state governor, after he discovered he was being investigated by the Met for serious fraud. Ibori recently pleaded guilty to money laundering and was jailed in the UK, after the conclusion of a major investigation into his financial affairs.
The allegation now being investigated by police is that some detectives on the Met's Proceeds of Corruption Unit, which investigated Ibori, were receiving payments in exchange for information about the ongoing investigation.

Royal Military Police chief found dead in Iraq
The senior British military police investigator has been found dead in his quarters at the British Base in Basra in Southern Iraq. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that the body of Captain Ken Masters, 40, was discovered in his accommodation in Waterloo Lines, Basra, Iraq on Saturday 15 October 2005.

Lee Bradley Brown, 39, from east London, died on Tuesday after he was taken to a Dubai police station where he was allegedly assaulted and put into a cell. It has been reported that Mr Brown, was arrested over a row at the luxury hotel Burj Al Arab hotel.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to launch an investigation into four officers of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), including the force's chief constable, Sir Peter Fahy. It is understood that the Sir Fahy is being investigated over an allegedly mis-handled probe into a suspected sex offender.
