Olympic Fan Gets Rings Piercings

An Olympics fan has had five piercings in her upper thigh so she can wear the sporting event's iconic five rings.

Laura Thornton, 27, made the one-inch wide tribute to the Games to "show support" for Team GB.

She told the Daily Mail newspaper the procedure took just 30 minutes to complete.

Nottingham girl Laura's younger sister Natalie, 23, works as a piercer and carried out the unusual piercing.

Natalie pierced two small holes for each ring in Laura's thigh before attaching them to make the design.

Laura, who works as a stockroom assistant, said: "I wanted to commemorate the Games in an unusual way and one night we were chatting and hit upon the idea of an Olympic piercing. I think it looks great. I'm proud to be showing my support for Team GB. It did sting a bit but I just thought, like the athletes, no pain, no gain."

Laura had a surface piercing done, so called because it goes through skin rather than from one side to the other through other tissue, as ear piercings do.

Surface piercings are the most difficult to heal as they are likely to be rejected by the body within a matter of months.
