Charts Boost For Olympics Artists

Music artists who had a part in the Olympics opening ceremony have seen a boost in their sales, nudging them into the charts.

Mike Oldfield, Emeli Sande, the Arctic Monkeys and Underworld are among those who benefited from extra post-ceremony sales.

Benefit Shake-Up 'Could Close Women's Refuges'

A charity that runs refuges for victims of domestic violence has warned it will have to close all its centres because of plans to change benefit rules.

The charity - Refuge - said the new universal credit will disadvantage them compared to how housing benefit currently works, leading to "the loss of 297 units of refuge accommodation across the country".

It said women will be more at risk of being harmed or killed because they cannot afford to leave the homes they share with abusive partners.

Coalition Is 'United' On Carbon Cuts - Clegg

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg today dismissed claims of rifts within the coalition government over how to cut carbon emissions.

Mr Clegg was unveiling a £100m investment in energy efficiency, and said the UK was "leading from the front" in attempts to decarbonise energy production and fight climate change.

He said: "The coalition government is unreservedly committed to helping our low-carbon sector thrive - no ifs, no buts. It is sometimes presented in the press as if it is riddled with debate and division with regard to greening the economy. That isn't the case."

Clegg To Urge Party To 'Stick With The Coalition'
In Nick Clegg’s address to the Liberal Democrat conference later today he is expected to urge his party to stick with the coalition and insist the government is on a path to prosperity. In his end-of-conference-speech, the deputy prime minister will also pledge extra money for 110,000 children struggling with maths and English.

The Prime Minister's highly controversial decision not to support the European plan to save the single currency has prompted his pro-European deputy to speak out against the move. Nick Clegg called the decision "a bitter disappointment" and said Britain risked becoming "isolated and marginalised" from the European Union members.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will be in charge of the coalition government for the next two weeks while Prime Minister David Cameron takes his summer holiday. Downing Street has stressed that Mr Cameron will remain in overall control, while the Liberal Democrat leader will stand in for him at some events.

British Soldier Killed In Iraq
A British soldier has been killed while serving in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced. The soldier, from the Parachute Regiment, is reported to have died on Wednesday 5 September. The MoD said he sustained fatal injuries while conducting routine operations in support of ongoing Coalition activity.
