Bomb disposal expert killed in Iraq

A British soldier died in southern Iraq yesterday, bringing to 26 the total number of deaths in the armed forces since the beginning of the war 13 days ago.

The soldier, a bomb disposal expert, was killed after the ordnance he was defusing exploded. The name and regiment of the deceased has not yet been released but the victim's family have been informed.

So far, 15 servicemen have died in accidents and five as a result of so-called "friendly fire" incidents with US forces.

British soldier dies in Basrah helicopter crash
A British soldier has died after an RAF helicopter crashed in southern Iraq today. The MoD confirmed that the soldier was killed in "an accident" involving an RAF Puma helicopter at Basrah International Airport. Two other British military personnel were injured during the incident.

UK special forces soldier confirmed dead in Iraq firefight
A British special forces soldier has been killed during a firefight in Iraq, it has been confirmed. Corporal Ian Plank, 31, was among a group of SBS and SAS soldiers attacking an Al Qaida training camp believed to be in northern Iraq when he shot and killed last Friday. Four other British soldiers have been reported as injured during the exchange.

Brown told 'bring them home'
The mother of a British Soldier killed in Iraq has urged Gordon Brown to withdraw troops from Iraq when he becomes prime minister. Rose Gentle's son Gordon was killed in Iraq in 2004 while serving with the Royal Highland Fusiliers. Ms Gentle said that she was sickened to learn that the 150th British soldier had been killed in Iraq.

British soldier killed in Basra
A British soldier has been killed during a search and detention operation in Basra, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The soldier, a member of the Parachute Regiment, was shot during the operation in the southern Iraq city and was evacuated to a nearby military hospital, but later died from his injuries.

MoD names British soldier killed in Iraq
The Ministry of Defence has named the British soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on Tuesday night. Sergeant Christian Hickey, of the 1st Battalion the Coldstream Guards, died as a result of his injuries, following the explosion, which took place around 11:23 local time in Basra on Tuesday night.
