Anti-war protesters pledge series of demonstrations

Anti-war protesters have promised to step up demonstrations against military action in Iraq.

Several demonstrations will be held over the next 10 days including a Budget Day protest to highlight the war's £3 billion cost. They say public support for the conflict is "slipping fast".

The US embassy in London will be targeted on Saturday by the Stop The War Coalition. Protests will also be mounted outside RAF bases.

Left wing Labour MPs also plan to challenge the budget because of the money being allocated to the war.

Andrew Murray, chairman of the coalition, told a news conference in Westminster: "Popular backing for military action is slipping fast as people begin to realise how badly the war is hitting Iraqi civilians and British soldiers.

"They feel misled by the government, they want British troops brought back home and they want the war to stop."

Mr Murray said he expected hundreds of thousands of people to join the next national demonstration in London on April 12 - the third protest held in the capital over the conflict with Iraq.
