Terror Suspect Launches Extradition Appeal

Suspected British terrorist Babar Ahmad has launched a High Court appeal in an attempt to halt extradition to the US.

The suspect, 37, has been held in UK custody for almost eight years, without trial.

Last week, the European Court of Human Rights gave approval for the extradition of five terrorist suspects, including Babar Ahmad, from the UK to the US.

Babar Ahmad’s judicial review application will be heard with fellow suspects Abu Hamza and Khaled al-Fawwaz on Tuesday, a judge ruled.

Given the final approval from the European Court, the extradition of all suspects could theoretically take place within weeks.

The men’s challenges will be heard by two judges, Sir John Thomas, President of the Queen's Bench Division, and Mr Justice Ouseley.

The defendants will need to prove to a judge that there is "some new and compelling factor" that has not been already considered by previous courts.

Anti-extradition campaigner Karl Watkin has asked for permission to privately prosecute Mr Babar.

Ahmed’s family released a statement, saying: "We are simply asking for the court to put a hold on Babar's extradition so that the DPP has the necessary time and space to make a decision on the material provided to him in April 2012 which was kept hidden from him by the police for eight years.

"We trust that the court will find that this is a reasonable request which is both in the public interest and the interests of justice," they added.
