Council Row Over Price Of Free Concert

A one-off concert starring Alicia Keys that cost Manchester City Council about £425,000 to stage is to be investigated by a spending watchdog.

The council's Liberal Democrats group called for the action after the free event held at Manchester Cathedral.

The Labour-run council said it helped to organise the concert to showcase the city's global profile.

Keys, a 14-time Grammy award-winning artist, performed on 24 September for the MTV Crashes series.

A spokesperson for the council said the council’s finance scrutiny committee would discuss the issue.

Suspected Rothko Vandal In Court

A man has appeared in court charged with defacing a Mark Rothko painting at London's Tate Modern gallery.

Camberwell Green magistrates were told 26-year-old Wlodzimierz Umaniec - who followed the hearing via video link - would plead not guilty to criminal damage.

Mr Umaniec, a Polish national of no fixed address also known as Vladimir Umanets, was remanded in custody.

Witnesses saw a man daub the Rothko mural, Black on Maroon, on Sunday afternoon before fleeing the gallery.

Mr Umaniec's next court hearing was scheduled for 16 October.

Six Elks Stolen From Farm

Six fully grown elks have been stolen from a farm in Somerset.

Officers believe the thieves may have used dogs to round up the large beasts and must have had a sizeable lorry. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who has been offered cuts of elk meat – or even an actual elk.

Fortunately, farmer Paul Richards managed to stop a herd of bison, which roam in the same fields as the elk, from escaping after a fence was cut.

The animals, which stand taller than a human adult, vanished between Thursday and Friday last week. Another elk was found nearby and returned.
