Costa Coffee Decides To Leave Devon Town

A national coffee chain has pulled out of a Devon town that prides itself on having independent shops.

South Hams District Council had approved plans by Costa Coffee to open in Fore Street, Totnes.

But in a letter, Chris Rogers, managing director of Costa, said the company had "recognised the strength of feeling" against national brands in the town.

The move, detailed in a letter to "the people of Totnes", has been welcomed by campaign group Say No to Costa.

Athletes Appeal For Return Of Stolen Medals

Two Olympic athletes have appealed for the return of their stolen medals.

Team GB rower Alex Partridge and hockey player Hannah Macleod had been enjoying a night out in London with fellow Olympians after a Buckingham Palace reception when their medlas were stolen.

"It's very, very upsetting. It would mean everything to me to get them back," Partridge said.

Macleod issued a plea: "If you come across Alex's or my medal, just hand them in," she said. "We want them back, they're of no value to anyone else."

Record Figures For Digital Radio

Three of the BBC's digital stations have attracted record audiences in the past three months, according to figures released by Rajar.

BBC 6 Music had 1.62 million listeners each week between July and September – an increase of 391,000 on the same period last year.

Radio 4 Extra and the Asian Network also saw their audience share rise.

Overall, DAB radio accounted for 20% of all listening, up from 18% during the same period in 2011.

Whitbread Announce UK Jobs Boost
Whitbread, the hotel and restaurant group, has said it plans to create 12,000 jobs in the UK over the next five years. According to Sky News, the group outlined its plans for expansion as it continues to see its profit increase. The group owns both Premier Inn and Costa Coffee and has created 3,000 UK jobs over the last year alone.

Two Held Over New Year Stab Death
Police investigating the killing of a teenager stabbed to death in the early hours of the New Year in central London have arrested two men. Henry Bolombi, 17, of Wyldfield Gardens, Lower Edmonton, was attacked in Edmonton, north London, after a row with a group of youths.

Man's body found in resort
The body of a man has been found in a resort in Cornwall. Police in Newquay were called to an address in Fore Street around 6:15pm on Monday evening, following reports that a man had fallen unconscious. Officers found the body of a 44-year-old man who had died in the property.

15 Arrested In Scrap Yard Raids
Police have raided five scrap metal yards in Bristol and Somerset, arresting 15 people in connection with handling stolen goods. Avon and Somerset police confirmed that over 60 officers were joined by representatives from utility companies when they carried out the raids on Tuesday morning.

Nine appear in court over £53m Securitas raid
Nine people have appeared in court charged in connection with the £53 million robbery at a Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent. Six men and three women appeared at the Old Bailey via video link at the plea and case management hearing. The case has now been adjourned until October 3 and a provisional trial date has been set for April 16 next year.
