Firework Attacks Blinds Boy In One Eye
A 14-year-old boy has lost vision in one eye after being hit in the face with a rocket firework.
The teenager was deliberately attacked while playing with three friends in a children's area on fields near Duchy Road, in Salford, when the incident occurred at around19:30 GMT on 5 November.
The boy was taken to hospital were he was told he will never regain the sight in his left eye.
Police said a man was then seen running away from the park.
Det Con Jon Marsh said: "This is an inexplicably savage attack and I have to say that while it is tragic that this boy has been blinded in one eye, it is also fortunate that nobody was killed.
"For many years, all of the authorities have worked hard to advise the public on how to enjoy a safe bonfire night, and then we hear of incidents like this.
"Our inquiries so far suggest that this was a deliberate act.
"Not only am I appealing for witnesses, but I am also asking for any information that could help this investigation."
Assistant County Fire Officer Peter O'Reilly said: "Our thoughts go out to the teenager and his family who are now living with the impact of this injury for the rest of their lives.
"Fireworks are dangerous, which is why we work so hard to encourage people to put safety first. It saddens us to hear of any injuries, particularly when they have such a devastating effect like this one.
"We hope the community is able to help us identify those responsible for this particular incident."

The 15-year-old was walking along New John Street after 10pm on Tuesday September 1 when two men walked up to him and ordered him to hand over personal items. The main offender then punched him in the face, causing a severe eye injury.

Toddler In Pond Tragedy
An investigation has been launched after a three-year-old boy died when he fell into a garden pond. Ethan Read, from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, died in spite of his mother's attempts to revive him before the ambulance arrived. The incident happened at an address in Coney Weston. The death is being treated as unexplained.

Two million people 'risking their sight'
More than two million people in the UK are at risk of needlessly losing their sight through treatable eye conditions, according to a new report. The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) said that 1.9 million people with diabetes and 250,000 people with early-stage glaucoma are unknowingly risking blindness.

Boots set to withdraw unprofitable services
Some Boots staff face an uncertain future today after the company announced that it is to close its laser eye correction, dentistry, chiropody and laser hair removal businesses. The announcement will impact on around 850 jobs, but the company has said that it aimed to re-deploy "as many people as possible".
