Plans Unveiled For London Cycle Highway

Plans have been unveiled to create a new "cycle superhighway" in London.

The route would be 5.8 miles long and stretch from New Cross Gate to Victoria, through Peckham, Camberwell, Kennington and Vauxhall.

It will include safety improvements at 52 junctions including advanced stop lines, cycle feeder lanes and speed reduction measures.

The public consultation over the proposals will end on 11 January.

The fifth cycle highway is being designed with safety in mind by, among other initiatives, widening the lanes and using large "Trixi" mirrors to give drivers better views of cyclists.

It will also include an "early start" cycle facility at Vauxhall Bridge Road and Millbank to enable cyclists to get a head-start on traffic.

The news follows calls for mayor of London Boris Johnson to reduce the number of cycling accidents in the city.

The number of cycling casualties has risen by 50% between 2006 and 2011, according to a report by Transport for London
