42% Of Marriages End In Divorce

The number of divorces in England and Wales in 2011 was 117,558, a decrease of 1.7% since 2010, when there were 119,589 divorces, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The number of divorces in 2011 was highest among men and women aged 40 to 44.

Based on marriage, divorce and mortality statistics for 2010, it is estimated that the percentage of marriages ending in divorce is 42%, compared with 45% in 2005.

Figures show marriage increasing in popularity
The latest statistics have revealed that the number of people getting married in the UK increased in 2003. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, which were published ahead of National Marriage Week (February 7 – 14), showed that marriages in England and Wales increased by 4.7% in 2003, to 267,700.

'Marked fall' in divorce rates
Divorce rates in England and Wales among men and women under 40 have fallen by 13% and 12% respectively since 2004, the Office of National Statistics has reported. However, the ONS also found that men and women in their late twenties had the highest divorce rates of all five-year age groups for the fourth consecutive year.

Bankrupt Property Tycoon Dies In Fall From Penthouse
A bankrupt property tycoon has died after falling from a fourth floor penthouse onto railings in London. Scot Young, 52, fell from his property in Marylebone on Monday. Mr Young was involved in a high-profile divorce battle with his wife Michelle, who got a £20m settlement last year.

Lawson And Saatchi Granted Decree Nisi
The ten-year marriage of Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi has come to an end following a court haring lasting just over one minute. A decree nisi was granted in divorce proceedings begun by Saatchi last month. It followed an incident in which the art collector was photographed gripping the TV chef by the throat outside a London restaurant.
