Flat Fire Inquest Begins

An inquest is due to begin into the deaths of six people in a fire at a block of flats in 2009.

A faulty television started the fire on the ninth floor of Lakanal House in Camberwell.

A three-week-old baby was among the people killed when residents were trapped on the 11th floor.

Residents have claimed the building’s layout made evacuation difficult and that some people on the 11th floor had been told to wait for rescuers.

A decision is to be made on whether Southwark Council will face criminal charges.

Nearly 100 families were made homeless by the fire.

The inquest is expected to last until the end of March.
