Parents Guilty Of Toddler Methadone Death

A mother and father have been found guilty over the death of their 2-year-old son, who died after drinking his mothers methadone.

45-year-old Shaun Binfield and 33-year-old Sally Dent, of Belper, Derbyshire, had denied the charge of manslaughter but were convicted after a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

Two-year-old Riley Pettipierre, died in March 2012 after drinking Ms Dent's prescription methadone, which had been poured into a child's drinking beaker.

Riley was found lifeless by paramedics and pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

A post-mortem found a fatal amount of methadone in his blood, stomach and urine.

Traces of both heroin and cannabis were also found in his hair.

Binfield and Dent had originally told police Riley must have climbed on top of a wardrobe in the bedroom where the methadone was usually stored in a locked, wooden box.

The pair were remanded into custody to be sentenced at a later date.
