Police Fly To Australia Over Harris Abuse Claims

Detectives investigating sex abuse allegations against television personality Rolf Harris have flown to Australia.

It is understood they are visiting an alleged female witness as part of their enquiries.

According to Australia's Channel Seven, the woman first contact police last November about an incident she claimed to have witnessed in the early 1990s.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that two officers from Operation Yewtree had travelled to Australia, but would not give any further comment.

83-year-old Harris was arrested by police in March and questioned on suspicion of committing sexual offences. He was bailed until May and has not been charged.

He is originally from Perth, Australia, but has lived in the UK for 50 years.

Detectives working on Operation Yewtree have said they are looking at three categories of offences - those allegedly committed by the late Jimmy Savile, those allegedly committed by Savile and others, and alleged offences by others.

Harris was arrested in relation to the category of alleged offences by others.

British Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan Named

Three British soldiers who were killed after their armoured vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb have been named.

The men were carrying out a routine patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province in Afghanistan on Tuesday when the blast happened.

They have been named as Corporal William Savage and Fusilier Samuel Flint from the Royal Highland Fusiliers, the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment Of Scotland. The third soldier was Private Robert Hetherington, of the 51st Highland, 7th Battalion, a Territorial Army member.

The attack was on a Mastiff vehicle, deemed to be one of the safest and Prime Minister David Cameron said he would consider "carefully" how the deaths had occurred.

The MoD said it is the first time British soldiers in a Mastiff vehicle, which was introduced in 2007, have been killed by a roadside bomb.

It is understood that seven military patients were flown out of Afghanistan to the UK on Wednesday afternoon, but it is unclear how many of them were injured in the blast.

Man In Hospital After Car Plunges Into River

A man is being treated in hospital after his car careered off a slipway and into the River Fowey.

The man, who managed to swim to shore, was treated by paramedics before being taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

It is understood he is in a stable condition.

No one else was in the car at the time of the accident, which occurred around 21:40 on Wednesday.

Police divers, fire crews, lifeboats and paramedics all attended the incident, and a spokeperson for the RNLI said the man was able to struggle free of the vehicle.

The RNLI added the man "had taken the bend at the Old Ferry Slip too fast and driven straight into the River Fowey".

The car was brought ashore overnight.
