US Firm To Create 100 New Jobs In Swansea

US firm, PRA, has confirmed it is to create 100 new jobs in Swansea.

In a press release, the clinical research company said it will see its workforce double in the city, after a £1.29m fund from the Welsh Government.

The jobs, which will be for graduate level, will be for a new multilingual help desk.

The North Carolina-based firm currently employs 100 people to collect, analyse and interpret data from clinical trials. The new investment will see its staff increase to 200.

Economy Minister Edwina Hart described PRA as a "strategically important company" within life sciences.

Steve Powell, PRA Executive Vice President, said the investment would mean "significant job creation and support for the local economy".

He added: "As a leading clinical research organisation, we are committed to the growth of our Swansea team and to transforming clinical trials across all phases of drug development; the new building and jobs demonstrates PRA's commitment to offering a more dynamic service to our customers, both locally and internationally."

PRA currently has more than 50 global offices and employs more than 5,000 people.

It is understood most of the Welsh losses will be management and administrative posts in Port Talbot and Llanwern near Newport. 155 jobs in Yorkshire will go, alongside 120 in the West Midlands and 30 on Teesside.

Planned New Deal expansion slammed by Tories
Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary David Willetts has condemned Government plans to expand the New Deal programme to include a million sick and disabled people, claiming that the jobs scheme fails to get many unemployed people into sustained work. Chancellor Gordon Brown announced the planned expansion in an election campaign speech.
