Cardiff Clamp-Down On 'Illegal' Workers
Three people have been arrested during a clampdown on illegal workers in Cardiff.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper was present at a series of enforcement raids in Cardiff to witness first hand the work being done to apprehend those working and living in the UK illegally.
Home Office Immigration Enforcement Officers targeted a total of six businesses suspected of hiring illegal workers, leading to three arrests.
A Pakistani man was arrested at Splott Fish Bar, Splott, for a suspected breach of his student visa.
Two Chinese nationals were arrested at Red Hot China, Llanharan, for suspected overstaying.
Both businesses were told a penalty of up to £10,000 per illegal worker could be imposed unless proof is provided that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said: "Enforcement operations like these send out a clear message to those that choose to abuse our immigration system. Hiring illegal workers has a serious impact on communities, undermining legitimate businesses and taking jobs from those genuinely able to work.
"The government has already made significant changes to the immigration system, which has seen immigration drop to its lowest level for more than a decade. Our new Immigration Bill will give our enforcement officers further tools to crack down on abuse, including doubling fines for employers who use illegal labour."

Twenty-One Arrested In Immigration Raids
Twenty-one people have been arrested in an operation run between North Wales Police and the Border and Immigration Agency. Two people were detained on suspicion of facilitating the illegal entry of illegal immigrants. The other 19 people are suspected of being illegal immigrants and will be interviewed today by the Border and Immigration Agency.

Points-based immigration criteria scheme launched
A new points-based immigration system, similar to that used by Australia, has been launched by the Home Secretary. The points based system is a central part of the Government's five year strategy for asylum and immigration, which was published in February 2005, and aims to ensure that only those who benefit Britain can come here to work or study.

Government publishes immigration bill
The government has announced plans to strengthen UK border controls and clamp down on illegal workers, as part of the new Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill. The Bill includes a proposal to introduce fines of up to £2,000 per employee for employers who recruit illegal workers.

Restaurant Workers Arrested In Immigration Probe
Five restaurants could be facing a total of £90,000 in fines following a series of raids by Border officers in Brighton and Hove. Acting on intelligence, officers carried out the visits on Friday 26 October where they questioned staff to check if they had the right to work in the UK.
