UK Women Plead Guilty To Peru Drug Smuggling

Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid have pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle cocaine out of Peru.

The two UK women were arrested in August when they were caught with 11kg (24lbs) of cocaine, with an estimated value of £1.5 million.

The women, both aged 20, claimed that they were forced into carrying the drugs.

McCollum, of Dungannon, County Tyrone, and Reid, of Lenzie, near Glasgow, appeared on Tuesday at Callao prison where a court hearing took place.

Both women entered a plea of guilty.

They will appear in court again on October 01 to be sentenced.

It is understood that a deal was struck for shorter sentences in exchange for the guilty pleas.

According to the BBC, a Peruvian court official is quoted as saying: "They will automatically have a sixth off the minimum jail sentence of eight years and will be sentenced to six years and eight months in prison."
