G4S Bid For Commonwealth Games Security Contract

G4S have bid to for part of the contract for security at next years Commonwealth Games.

The security firm was heavily criticised for its failure to provide the security needed for 2012's London Olympic Games, eventually paying some £70m in compensation to Locog after 3,500 soldiers had to be drafted in to meet requirements.

Security for the Commonwealth Games, to be held in Glasgow, will be divided between companies.

Crown Post Officer Staff To Strike On Nov 04

In an ongoing row over jobs and pay staff at hundreds of Crown post offices will stage industrial action on 04 November.

They will join Royal Mail workers, who are on strike over privatisation on the same day.

The CWU said Post Office management is "out of touch with its staff and customers over plans to close Crown offices and cut staff".

Bid Launched For Protect Status For Plum

A plum "probably" developed by medieval monks in Denbighshire is seeking protected status.

Officials are applying for the Europe-wide Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which if successful would see the Denbigh plum join Welsh Lamb and Beef with the special status.

The plum, which used to grow across north Wales and England, has been traced back to the 13th Century.

Other products which have PGI status include Stilton cheese, Arbroath smokies and Newcastle Brown Ale and Melton Mowbray pies.

Regulatory body for security guards and bouncers launched
In a shake up of the private security industry announced today bouncers and wheel clampers will have to be licensed and regulated by the new Security Industry Authority (SIA). The measures are designed to protect the public from rogue operators and create higher standards of recruitment and training for private security operatives and managers.

G4S Shares Drop 9% Amid Olympic Security Problems
Shares in security provider G4S fell 9% after announcing that it had failed to recruit enough security staff for the Olympic Games, and could face up to a £50m loss on its contract. Late on Friday, G4S said it faced a £35m-£50m loss on the £284m contract after admitting that it did not have enough staff to cover the Games.

Tickets to the Olympic Games are now on sale and Foreign Office staff around the world are marking this key milestone in the run-up to London 2012. Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "In just 500 days, the world’s gaze will turn to the UK as the lights go up on the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.
