Businesses 'benefit' from setting up in deprived areas
Businesses are being challenged to reap the rewards of investing in deprived areas, following the publication of 'Changing Practices' – a good practice guide on how companies can benefit from opportunities in such areas.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister report contains anecdotal evidence from businesses that have moved into deprived areas. The guide sets out staff loyalty, jobs creation, and business growth and increased recruitment from local black and minority ethnic communities as pluses for operating within disadvantaged localities.
Minister for Social Exclusion and Equality Barbara Roche said: "Economic regeneration is vital to our efforts to create places where people want to live, not leave. We must challenge the myth that deprived areas make bad business sense. Because the evidence tells a different story, one where companies are seeing the results on their balance sheets, and communities are benefiting from more jobs, new skills, and better local services."
William Moyes, Director General of British Retail Consortium, which assisted in compiling the report, said that "active participation in economic and social regeneration" by business can help bring about cohesive, vibrant local communities that benefit the community as a whole.

PM Visit Flood Hit Areas
More heavy rain is expected in areas already affected by flooding, according to the Met Office, which has issued a yellow warning for rain in south-west England and 16 severe flood alerts in southern England. However the situation in the worst-hit areas of the Thames is expected to improve this week.

Birth Rate Doubles In Least Deprived Areas
Twice as many woman are giving birth in the most deprived areas of England when compared to the least deprived areas, according to new figures released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). The rate of hospital delivery to women living in the deprived areas in England was 37.2 per 1,000 population, compared to 18.

UK's deprived areas to benefit from £800m
Some of the most deprived areas in the UK are to be targeted for regeneration through an £800 million two-year funding package announced today by the Deputy Prime Minister. The package will be shared out among 88 local authorities areas through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund allocation.

Employment in deprived areas boosted by European funding

The European Commission awarded the extra money following a review that showed a high level of performance by the ESF in England.
