Birth Rate Doubles In Least Deprived Areas

Twice as many woman are giving birth in the most deprived areas of England when compared to the least deprived areas, according to new figures released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

The rate of hospital delivery to women living in the deprived areas in England was 37.2 per 1,000 population, compared to 18.6 per 1,000 in more affluent areas.

There was also a national fall in the number of teenage deliveries in England over 2012-13, with the figure dropping 8.4% from 2011-12.

In 2012-13 there were more deliveries to teenage mothers living in the most deprived areas (7,640 or 31.1 per 1,000 teenage girls) than to those living in the least deprived areas (800 or 3.6 per 1,000 teenage girls).

The figures do show a narrowing gap between rates of delivery in the most deprived areas and those in the least deprived, however.

In 2011-12 delivery rates in the most deprived areas were 34.1 per 1,000 teenage girls (8,330 deliveries) and in the least deprived areas this was 4.1 per 1,000 teenage girls (920 deliveries). In 2007-08 rates of teenage deliveries were 47.7 in the most deprived areas (11,620 deliveries in total) and 4.4 in the least deprived areas (980 deliveries in total).
