Govt To Send £18.4m In Aid For Refugees
The Deputy Prime Minister has announced that the UK government is to send £18.4m in aid over two years to the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) to provide vital assistance to refugees in Jordan fleeing the fighting in Syria.
The £18.4m is part of half a billion pounds in aid being provided by the UK government to help victims of the crisis in Syria, including £100m announced by the Deputy Prime Minister at the UN General Assembly in September.
Speaking at a reception with British Muslims in Whitehall, he said: "I have been clear since the crisis in Syria began that the United Kingdom cannot turn a blind eye to these tragic events. This funding for refugees in Jordan is just the latest evidence that the British people will not stand by while so many people are suffering. As I said at the UN in September, I hope more countries will follow our lead and help to fill the shortfall in aid for the innocent victims of this conflict."
Police Appeal For Two Missing Children
Police are growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of two missing children.
Officers are appealing to the public, specifically the travelling community, for help in finding two sisters from Greenford who also have connections in the Edgware and Harrow areas but could be anywhere in the UK or the Republic of Ireland
Kathleen Doherty, 11-years-old, and Biddy Doherty, 14-years-old, are believed to be in the care of members of the travelling community.
The High Court has ordered that the children be returned to the care of the local authority.
Anyone with information in the UK is asked to call police on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Met Dog Attacked And Injured
A Metropolitan Police dog is under observation after being struck around the head with a metal baton during an incident in Downham on 6 November.
Fuzz, a five-and-a-half-year-old German shepherd dog, was attacked in the Calmont Road area at around 2.30pm as he helped to detain a man suspected of being involved in the armed robbery of a moped.
He, along with officers, pursued the man after he dumped the moped and managed to catch up with him, at which point the suspect struck him around the head with a metal, asp-like baton.
Despite his injuries, Fuzz continued to tackle the man who was subsequently arrested by officers at the scene on suspicion of robbery, criminal damage (in relation to Fuzz) and animal cruelty.
Noticing that Fuzz was bleeding heavily from his nose and had also sustained a cut under his eye, he was taken by his handler, PC Craig Calthorpe, for emergency veterinary treatment.
He is now under observation and on painkillers but is expected to make a full recovery.
