Network Rail Apologise Over Level Crossing Deaths

The House of Commons Transport Committee has highly criticised Network Rail in a report for its "callous disregard" over crossing victims relatives.

They urged the firm to apologise for the way they have handled the tragedies in the past and also warned about the danger level crossings.

The committee chairman Louise Ellman said the number of these deaths must aim for zero deaths by 2020.

Mark Carne, responsible of Network Rail responded by publishing a "full and unreserved apology on behalf of Network Rail to all those whose life has been touched by a failing, however large or small, made by this company in managing public safety at level crossings and in failing to deal sensitively with the families affected".

The rail infrastructure company said that the risk of level crossings had been reduced by a quarter since 2010. The firm has closed almost 800 crossings and is working to build footbridges to replace crossings, installing power-operated gates and introduce spoken warnings.

Network Rail has launched a £3 million campaign warning people of the danger of misusing level crossings. The Don't Run The Risk campaign includes a television advert which shows the damage caused by a train hitting a car on a level crossing.

Legal Action Taken Over Cumbrian Rail Crash
It has been revealed that Network rail is to be prosecuted over the Cumbrian rail crash back in 2007, which claimed one life. The rail regulation body, The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has said that they have started legal proceedings against Network Rail for a breach of health and safety law.

A government committee has announced that a high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham has a "good case". The announcement comes after the Government carried out a public consultation on the proposal and the recommended route for an initial high-speed line from London to the West Midlands.

Firms accept liability for Potters Bar rail crash
In a joint statement made today Network Rail and Jarvis plc have formally accepted liability for the 2002 Potters Bar rail crash. Network Rail and Jarvis said they hoped that by "formalising the liability issue, those affected by the tragedy will gain some level of comfort and assistance".
