Beckham passes televised Real medical

The final hurdle in the David Beckham transfer saga was overcome today after the England midfielder passed his medical, ensuring his place as a Real Madrid player next season.

Coverage of his medical was unprecedented in footballing history. The 90-minute test was screened live on Real Madrid TV after the England captain had flown into military airport Torrejon De Ardoz by private jet from London.

Beckham will be officially unveiled in Madrid colours tomorrow at the club's Bernabeau Stadium before joining his new team-mates for pre-season training in the middle of July.

The 28-year-old former Manchester United star has just returned from a 10-day promotional tour of the Far East.

He has already expressed his delight at the move, describing it as "an amazing opportunity for me at this stage in my career and a unique and exciting experience for my family".

Beckham's £25 million transfer fee is expected to be paid over a four-year period with an initial £5.5 million being paid up front. A further £12 million will be split into four yearly payments with the remaining £7 million being dependent on Real's performances in the Champions League.
