The 54-year-old, who retired from the PSNI in March 2011 after being one of the most high-profile officers in Northern Ireland, was arrested along with five other men. On Thursday a 71-year-old man from County Down was also arrested. Three of the six men initially arrested have been released pending a report to prosecutors.

The Northern Ireland detainees included Mr McCausland, the 71-year-old, a 48-year-old serving police officer, a 37-year-old member of the PSNI's civilian staff and a 62-year-old civilian. Those arrested in England were two civilians aged 34 and 54.
