Chester Zoo Best In The UK

Travel website TripAdvisor has named Chester Zoo the best in the UK, the second best in Europe and the sixth best in the world.

The 2014 Travellers' Choice Awards revealed that the UK has the most award -winning zoos of all European counties, including: Colchester Zoo, Essex; Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Devon; Blackpool Zoo, Lancashire; Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, Burford, Oxfordshire; Knowsley Safari Park, Merseyside; and South Lakes Safari Zoo, Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria.

Veteran Journalist Harry Chapman Pincher Dies Aged 100

Harry Chapman Pincher, a veteran investigative journalist best known for uncovering military secrets, has died aged 100.

Pincher was defence and science correspondent for the Daily Express for over 30 years, as well as publishing several books.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Pincher's son, Michael, said his father had died "of old age" and had faced death with "no regrets, no fear and no expectation".

American Pharmacy Giant To Buy Boots

The chemist chain Boots is to be bought by US pharmacy giant Walgreens, pending shareholder agreement.

Walgreens bought a 45% share in Alliance Boots and is now seeking to buy the remaining stock.

It is understood that the new combined company will be called "Walgreens Boots Alliance", and its headquarters will be in the Chicago area, with the Boots UK headquarters in Nottingham.

Hairspray Scoops Four Olivier Awards
West End musical 'Hairspray' has won four awards at this year's Laurence Olivier Awards. The stage musical was named best new musical, while newcomer Leanne Jones won the award for best actress in a musical for her role as Tracy Turnblad.

Mirren leads the winners at the Golden Globes
Dame Helen Mirren won two awards at the Golden Globe on a night where British talent triumphed. Dame Helen collected the award for Best Actress in a TV movie or mini-series for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in 'Elizabeth I' as well as Best Actress in a drama for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Stephen Frears' drama 'The Queen'.

Cold shoulder for ‘Cold Mountain’ in Oscar nominations
One of the front-runners in this year’s Academy Award race has been dramatically snubbed in the nominations list. ‘Cold Mountain’, the lavish American Civil War epic, directed by Anthony Minghella, only picked up two major nominations – ‘Best Actor’ for Jude Law and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ nomination for Renee Zellweger.

Irish Eyes Smile At Oscars
Irish luck prevailed at the 80th Academy Awards with Wicklow-based Daniel Day Lewis scooping the best actor award and Frames lead singer Glen Hansard sharing the best original song. Dark comedy ‘No Country For Old Men’ was a big winner with director brothers Joel and Ethan Coen picking up best picture, director and adapted screenplay.

Britain braced for heavy snow
Britain is braced for heavy snow as forecasters predict heavy snow showers are to sweep across the country tonight and into tomorrow. The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings, with predictions that between 2cm and 5cm of snow could fall in southeast England, while up to 15cm of snowfall is expected in areas of Wales and the Midlands.
