Bradford Academy Sends Pupils Home For Third Day

Hanson Academy in Bradford has barred 33 pupils from attending classes for not conforming with its uniform policy.

It is the third day that the academy has sent pupils home for failure to not wear the proper uniform.

On Tuesday 152 pupils were sent homes, followed by 63 on Wednesday and 33 today (Thursday).

It is understood that pupils are being sent home for a variety of uniform errors, including wearing hoop earrings, patterned trousers, or shoes not accepted as part of the policy.

Some parents have said that their children have been embarrassed by the situation, as it highlights that they are unable to afford to buy them the correct items.

Royal Mint To Change Queen's Portrait On UK Coins

The Royal Mint has announced that it intends to change the portrait of the Queen that appears on UK coins for the first time since 1998.

The Royal Mint Advisory Committee will chose a new portrait via a closed competition, marking the fifth time the Queen's images has been updated during her 62 year reign.

It is understood that specialist designers will be invited to anonymously submit entries.

Councillors Vow To Help Murco Workers

Pembrokeshire Council has vowed to help workers at Murco oil refinery to find new jobs, following the news that a deal to save the facility has collapsed.

On Tuesday it was confirmed that a deal for the sale of the refinery to Swiss-based Klesch Group had collapsed, putting hundreds of jobs on site, and potentially thousands of related jobs in the area, at risk.

It is understood that a "task force" of politicians are to meet next week to discuss "a way forward".

Over 500 Pupils Evacuated In School Fire
More than 500 pupils were evacuated from a school in north west London when a fire broke out in the roof the building. 65 staff and 540 pupils evacuated the school on Goodson Road in Willesden when the fire alarm sounded on Tuesday afternoon. There were no reports of any injuries.

Teachers Fear Pupils Will End Up On The Dole
Research released by The Prince's Trust and the Times Educational Supplement reveals that seven out of ten secondary school teachers are "increasingly worried" that their pupils will end up on benefits, while more than one in three feel that their efforts are "in vain", due to rising levels of unemployment.

Education strategy to focus on ethnic minorities
A new national strategy launched today aims to lift the achievement of ethnic minority pupils, and will focus on raising standards for black children in school. Only 30% of all black pupils got five or more good GCSEs (grades A* to C) in 2002, compared to a national average of 51%.
