WWII Mortar Trigger Security Alert At London Police Station

Explosives specialists were called to a south-west London police station on Monday afternoon after a man handed in a World War Two mortar bomb as part of a gun amnesty.

Police said that an 80-year-old man handed the 1940s device into Sutton station shortly before 13:30 on Monday.

Part of the building was evacuated and specialist explosives offices called in to examine the device. It was declared safe at about 14:30.

It is understood the elderly man had been given the mortar by his father and had kept it on his mantlepiece for a number of years.

Police said that the man brought the device into the station wrapped in plastic bags. He placed it on the counter telling officers it was a bomb. As officers where unable to see the device a security operation was launched to secure the device.
