Grant scheme for adult learners launched
Thousands of young adults starting college courses this autumn could get a new weekly grant to help meet the costs of improving their qualifications, following the launch of the Adult Learning Grant pilot scheme.
Developed as part of the government's Skills Strategy to improve the nation's skills base, the grant will offer an allowance of up to £30 per week to young adults on low incomes studying full time for a first level two qualification (five GCSEs or equivalent), or for young adults studying full time for a first level three qualification (two A-levels or equivalent).
The grant will be piloted in 10 areas across England from this September, with up to 12,000 young adult learners estimated to benefit from it.
The pilots will then be evaluated, with the aim of implementing a fully national scheme to benefit up to 60,000 adult learners.
Launching the pilot schemes, Ivan Lewis, Minister for Skills and Vocational Education, said: "The new Adult Learning Grant is a major step in helping those who might not have succeeded in their initial education but are serious about wanting to get the qualifications they need for their future careers.
"The Adult Learning Grant is not a handout but a hand up to get low-skilled adults learning and earning. It will open up opportunities for low skilled, low income young adults to gain key skills and qualifications which will help improve their employment prospects and provide a route to a better life."

Booze and drug deaths 'triple' over 20 years
Deaths from alcohol-related causes and drug-related poisoning both tripled in young men aged 15-44 between 1979 and 2001, according to a study of mortality trends published in Health Statistics Quarterly. In young adult women, deaths from alcohol related causes also tripled, the survey found.

Jump In Life Expectancy Revealed
Over half of all children born in the UK today will live to see their 100th birthday, a new report has revealed. The study also said British children, and those in other developing countries born in the 2000s, can expect to suffer fewer serious illnesses in their later years.

Terms Used By Financial Providers 'Not Understood' By Majority Of Adults
84% of people do not read the full terms and conditions when buying a financial product, according to the Money Advice Service. The decision cost the average adult £428 in 2013. One in three people don’t know what 'interest' means, while twice this proportion couldn't correctly identify the meaning of a 'budget'.

Vote Of No Confidence Cast Against Brighton's Green Party
The administration of Brighton's Green Party has received a vote of no confidence in the wake of its proposals to increase council tax. The party have proposed a 4.75% rise in council tax, pending a successful referendum. The party say that the increase would be used to fund adult social care services.
