Christmas shoppers are being urged to be cautious when shopping online, with smartphones and games consoles topping the 'Risky Christmas Gift List'.

The list, produced by Get Safe Online, Barclays and Kaspersky, reveals that the top five items used by fraudsters as 'too good to be true' bargains targeting Christmas shoppers are -

• mobile/smart phones –specifically iPhones and Samsung Galaxys

• games consoles – specifically PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

• footwear – specifically Ugg Boots

• clothing – specifically Barbour Jackets

• iPads – and iPad minis

CEO of Get Safe Online, Tony Neate, said: "With Cyber Monday on 1st December set to be yet another recording breaking day for online Christmas shopping, we felt it was important to highlight the most risky items, not to deter consumers from enjoying the benefits of shopping online, but to educate them on what they can do to prevent being caught out by online scammers.

"Every Christmas, without fail, we see worrying statistics about people being scammed online. We urge everyone in the UK to just spend a few minutes familiarising themselves with the scams out there and learning what they need do to keep safe so they don’t end up being a victim this Christmas. We know that Christmas is a busy and stressful time for people so we are urging people to just keep the basics in mind and look out for those bargains that just seem too good to be true."
