Man Jailed Over Bomb Hoaxes

A man has been jailed for two years and 10 months for making a series of hoax bomb calls in the Craigavon area of County Armagh.

20-year-old Kieran Lavery, from Meadowbrook in the Tullygally area of Craigavon, admitted making 16 hoax bomb calls on seven separate days between May 2013 and January 2014. He also admitted two counts of placing an article with intent to cause a bomb hoax.

Lurgan Neighbourhood Inspector Ken Annett said: "The hoax calls and hoax devices caused considerable disruption to the local community. They also meant that police officers who should have been carrying out neighbourhood duties and crime prevention patrols were diverted into dealing with these incidents.

"There were also financial costs incurred, running into tens of thousands of pounds, as a result of these hoaxes but the biggest cost has been disruption to the lives of local people and a reduction in the policing service they deserve."

The hoax calls about devices at locations in various parts of Craigavon and Lurgan were investigated by detectives from Serious Crime Branch.

Hoax devices were left at Tullygally Road East/Brownlow Road in Craigavon on 28 May 2013 and Tullygally Road East on 4 Jul 2013. Police said both were "crude" hoaxes but still caused disruption to the local community.

Progress towards the world's first power generating tidal lagoon potentially being built in Wales has been welcomed.

It follows the announcement in the National Infrastructure Plan that the government will start closer discussions with Tidal Lagoon Power Ltd who want to build a tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay.

Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb said: "This is great news for Wales and has the potential to provide a massive boost to the Welsh economy - creating thousands of jobs, attracting millions of pounds worth of investment and helping to secure Wales’s energy future.

"Wales is already home to some of the most cutting edge companies in the world and the country is uniquely placed to pioneer tidal power."
